AI Surrogate Models – Internship or Master Thesis

Title: Development of a surrogate model to capture the biomechanical behavior of the spine

About MDsim

MDsim is a MedTech start-up based in Luxembourg advancing the field of in-silico medicine. Our main product, SPINEsim, is a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) designed to transform spine health and improve the planning of surgical procedures. By combining advanced computer modeling and simulation (CM&S) with the power of data science and AI, we create digital twins of the spine to support clinical decisions. Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to bring proven technologies into healthcare and improve the quality of life of patients with spinal deformities worldwide.

Project objectives

Modelling the biomechanical behavior of the spine prior and after a spine surgery is key to maximize the positive outcomes of a surgery. Finite element models of the spine can be very complex when integrating several anatomical structures like the vertebrae, the intervertebral disks, the ligaments… Thus, developing surrogate models that are calibrated and trained over results of such finite element models can be of high importance to rapidly capture the main patterns of the biomechanical behavior of the spine. The objectives of the project are to perform/refine a bibliographic review, to select eligible models fulfilling predefined requirements, to implement proof-of-concepts using these models, to train/calibrate the models over finite element results and to verified them against reference results.
